Periods 2 and 5

We will continue our study of irony with a short story entitled, "The Necklace."  The author Guy Maupasant,  inspired O. Henry, the N.C. native who wrote last week's short story, "The Gift of the Magi."  Our new strategy this week is "inference."  What happens when you read between the lines?  What does the text say?  What do you say?  We'll also be diving into nonfiction texts.

Monday (class time)

We will listen to Aretha's R-E-S-P-E-C-T as a means to understanding how to make inference.

Introduce current events assignment.  Students are to find a current event that is based on a school related issue.  You must summarize your article, bring in a copy of it, analyze it by determining why the article was written, primary audience in which the article was intended to appeal to, respond to the article (what is your opinion and/or feeling about it- -you can agree or disagree with the original article or introduce a new point of view), and lastly, select the most powerful quote and/or passage from your article.

Small group activity:  "Cheque by Ordeal" inference activity

Begin "The Necklace"

Homework:  Monday night

  1. Current Event due on Friday.
  2. Bring in magazine ad or newspaper ad about a product. This activity requires you to analyze the inferences the producers expect us to make about the product they are trying to sell. Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) that describes what we are supposed to infer from the ad(s).

  1. This is pretty cool, Mrs. Greene. It's great to have an idea of what we're doing in class and a description of the homework, I think this will help me a lot. Although, could you make the font color a bit darker? It's kind of hard to read.

  2. Hey. Hope this works okay. I think Hero was acting kind of innocent and gullible to anything her friends say or tell her. I don't think she meddles in her dad's business at all, I think all she is thinking is "Oh yeah, dad got me a husband." She probably doesn't even have particular romantic feelings towards him, she just listen to rumors made by her friends, specifically Ursula and Margaret. Cheers!

  3. Do you mean the part in act five, scene four when Hero was masked? If so: I suppose that even if she was angry at her father she must have been relieved that he had stopped being angry and started helping her instead. As for Claudio, she must have been prepared to forgive him since she was once again on the verge of marrying him. Her friends went to great lengths to ensure her comfort. When she was disgraced, they were prepared to help her fake her own death.Beatrice was even prepared to have her disgracer killed. Next, they created an elaborate plot of disguises and falsehoods to have her forgiven and her marriage repaired.

  4. Well Beatrice tells (she says "to prove that he loves her") Bendick to kill Claudio because of what Claudio did to Hero. And that is a pretty far length to go for a friend if you ask me. Beatrice is pretty loyal and Hero is lucky to have a friend like her.
Also, good job with the blog!

  5. Good job with the blog, it looks great! I think Hero probably thinks of her father and Claudio in the same way during her "dead" time. She was probably very confused and kind of angry at both of them for not understanding her side of the story. Beatrice was a really good friend to Hero, claiming that Claudio was an evil man (
Is he not approved in the height a villain, /that hath/slandered, scorned, dishonored my kinswoman? ) and that Benedick should kill him to prove his love for Beatrice.

  6. Are we supposed to post our responses here, or in the posting for our class period? I did the latter, and nobody else is, so I'm a bit confused.

  7. Emilie...you are supposed to do it under your class period so it will be easier for Mrs. Greene to check your post.

  8. Just a quick question....where is the question?

  9. The blog is pretty cool. The green is somewhat bright. It isn't too bothersome. Anyway, Hero appeared to be shy during time being quiet. Her friends appeared to have comforted her by telling her about love and how everything is going to be happy when she's married. They also made dirty jokes which I believe always makes people happy. Also I can't tell if this is referring to when she is dead. *ahem*

  11. Kethan, I slightly agree with you in the fact that Beatrice was right that Claudio WAS an evil man. I would not consider her good for wanting to kill Claudio. All in all, it's just much ado about nothing really.

  12. Nicolas, it stops being "nothing" when the man you're about to marry shames you at the altar in front of half the town. With absolutely no basis on fact. That might kind of completely ruin your life.

  13. oh and homework answers are supposed to be posted under your class period, for future reference.

  14. does anyone else think that this font color is really hard to read?

  15. Yeah, Breanna. I had to squint at first to read that.

  16. This is Julian. The theme and font color hurts my eyes...

Hero is definitely happy to know that Leonato is back on her side. She is probably ready to forgive Claudio, because she still loves him. He may have basically destroyed every bit of her dignity with lies, bust there's always room for forgiveness. As for her friends, I wish I had friends like that. They're always there for her. Guys, would you be like that for me?

  17. Okay so Hero feels sort of betrayed by her Claudio and her father. Also she's really confused of why her father and Claudio think she cheated. And she feels betrayed by her father because he chose to believe Claudio over her. But luckily, Hero had Beatrice and her friends to be by her side. Beatrice especially is the best and more close of Hero's friends. An example of that is when she made Benedick prove his love for her by killing Claudio. That shows how protective of Hero she is, and that makes her a nicer and better friend.
